ITBP jawan shoots dead 5 colleagues, kills self

The jawan who opened fire from his service weapon was also shot dead, the Bastar police said.

Bhopal: An Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) jawan on Wednesday shot dead five colleagues in their camp at Kednar, under Dudai police station in Chhattis-garh’s south Bastar district of Narayanpur.

The jawan who opened fire from his service weapon was also shot dead, the Bastar police said. Two ITBP personnel were injured, and were airlifted to Raipur for treatment.

“It appears that the jawan who opened fire on his colleagues was under stress. The Narayanpur district superintendent of police has been asked for a report,” Bastar inspector general of police P Sunderraj said.

The ITBP’s 45th battalion camp was set up at Kednar, falling under Abujhmad — loosely translated as “unknown area”, as a counterinsurgency measure. Abujhmad is considered a Maoist stronghold.

The slain jawans were identified as head constables Mahendra Singh and Daljit Singh, and constables Surjit Sarkar, Biswaroop Mahatoo and Bijeesh.

The jawan who shot the killer was identified as constable Masudul Rahman.Those injured were identified as S.B. Ullas and Sitaram Doon.
