New Delhi: In what could be a setback for Sasikala Natarajan, a plea has been filed in Supreme Court stating that she shouldn't be the next Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.
The public interest litigation filed in the top court sought to restrain the swearing-in ceremony of the of AIADMK leader V K Sasikala as the CM, which is to take place tomorrow.
According to reports, the plea states that Sasikala should not be given the top post until the Supreme Court announces its verdict in Jaya’s illegal assets case next week. Sasikala is a co-accused in the case.
The charges against Sasikala, her son V.N. Sudhakaran and daughter-in-law Elavarasi, pertain to the acquisition of benami properties with the help of Jayalalithaa.
A special court in Bengaluru had convicted Jayalalithaa and her three associates in 2014 in the case and sentenced her to four years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore. However, the Karnataka High Court on May 11, 2015, acquitted Jayalalithaa and her three associates.
