Telangana slashes liquor prices in election year

HYDERABAD: In a move that is expected to stimulate demand and shore up the revenues in the election year, the Telangana state government has reduced liquor prices with immediate effect beginning Friday. With the exception of beer, prices of all brands of liquor have been slashed due to a reduction in excise duty.

As a result, the maximum retail price (MRP) of ₹10 on up to 180 ml bottles of all brands, ₹20 on 375 ml bottles, and proportionately on quarter and above volumes have been cut. However, liquor manufactured up to May 4, that is still in depots or stores will be sold at the old MRP.

Prohibition and excise commissioner Sarfaraz Ahmad, who held a teleconference with excise officials on Friday, stated that liquor manufactured from May 5, 2023, will have to bear price stickers with new MRP and be sold at new rates.

The commissioner directed that the new MRP be displayed in all wine retailers. According to excise sources, there will be no formal renewal of all bars beginning next year.

Sources contend that alcohol is being illegally imported into Telangana from other states as a result of the high prices of alcohol. Ahmad stated that the government has reduced liquor pricing in order to combat the illegal flow of 'desidar' (cheap liquor), and that NDPL (non-duty paid liquor) and illicitly distilled crime will be completely eradicated.
