800 bus stops to turn hi-tech in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: The city is to get hi-tech bus shelters at 800 new locations. These are places where buses stop for passengers. Officials have identified 1,100 locations that need shelters.
The GHMC will give contractors the job of building and maintaining the bus shelters. They can can use the space on the shelters to advertise, and pay the GHMC a monthly fee.
This was the outcome of a joint survey conducted by officials from the GHMC, Admin-istrative Staff College of India and the RTC. Following this, ASCI’s urban development and infrastructure department headed by Prof. V. Srinivas Chary framed the criteria to build modern hi-tech bus shelters.
These shelters would have free Wi-Fi, water kiosk, comfortable seating, display of route information of buses, a toilet, possibility of an ATM and illumination.
Dr Chary said tenders would be floated in packages in the public private partnership mo-de. It will be built on build-operate-transfer mode.
The civic body also proposes to replace all the older bus shelters in phases.
A senior GHMC official said, “If the private agencies do not maintain the bus shelters, they would be blacklisted and legal action would be taken against them as per the GHMC Act.”
Financial firms have agreed to provide over Rs 1,000 crore to the GHMC based on its credit ratings.
