Telangana: Kakatiya varsity on the boil, student demand justice
Warangal: Several students and police personnel were injured during a scuffle at the academic building of Kakatiya University on Wednesday. Scores of students from various colleges joined a rally organised by the ABVP and gathered in front of the administrative building.
They raised slogans against the university administration, demanding justice for the students who had suffered due to gross negligence of the university that led to faulty degree and PhD results.
The students alleged that several students either got less marks or were marked absent even though they had appeared for the examination.
For the PhD entrance exam results, the students were assessed with a different marking key instead of the original marking key. This resulted in several students scoring lesser marks than expected.
Some of the students who had failed the exams at the university had earlier passed the National Eligibility Test. The dismal failure of the university administration to roll back the erroneous procedures and assessments had led to the students’ agitation.
The students squatted in protest outside the administration building and demanded that Vice-Chancellor R. Sayanna should come out and hear them. When he failed to do so, students decided to go inside and meet him.
The police present at the venue tried to stop the students from entering the building. However, the students who outnumbered the police broke the doors and smashed glass panes.
Some of them managed to get through the resisting police personnel and barged inside the Vice-Chancellor’s chamber. They demanded an answer from Mr Sayanna. The police personnel had to physically drag the agitating students out from the V-C’s chamber.
Several students and police personnel including Kakatiya University police inspector S.M. Ali were injured.
Mr Sayanna finally came out and asked the students to call off the agitation, assuring them that a committee had been set up to inquire into the issues. He assured them that those found to be responsible for these errors would be suspended.
The inquiry would take place in a transparent way, he stressed.
Students allege discrepancies and negligence by officials
Students of Kakatiya University alleged that there were several discrepancies in the degree results declared by the university recently.
The students said the university administration had failed to tackle several issues that were plaguing the university.
“The degree results sheet is the best example to showcase the negligence of the university. Some of the students were given 105 marks out of a 100 in a subject. Some students who appeared for the examination were marked as absent in the results. Such negligence by the officials proves costly for a student’s future. The university must revalue the scripts. An enquiry must be carried out and the officials responsible for this negligence must be punished”, demanded ABVP leader Laxman.
Kakatiya University Vice-Chancellor Prof R. Sayanna on Wednesday agreed that there were mistakes.
“Regarding the MPhil and PhD examination, we conducted entrance test instead of eligibility test. To conduct the examination in a transparent way without giving way for irregularities, we jumbled the questions in the question booklet. But during processing the results, due to a technical error, the original key was used instead of a jumbled key. This led to many students scoring less. Several students have complained to me. I have checked the key paper and the scripts of the students and identified that a mistake was made,” he said.
