Weatherman predicts more rain for Telangana, Andhra Pradesh

Catchment areas in Karnataka, Maharashtra to be filled up.

Hyderabad: The prolonged dry spell may be worrying citizens, but IMD Director general Dr K.G. Ramesh on Saturday said there is nothing to worry as more rains are predicted in the coming days which will more than make up for the poor rainfall in the last few weeks in both the states.

“According to MET department predictions, rains has either started or going to start again in the catchment areas of Tungabhadra, Krishna and Godavari in upper areas in Karnataka and Maharastra and I am very sure that inflows will soon start reaching Telangana and Andhra Pradesh,” Dr Ramesh said.

“As of now Almatti and Narayanapur Dams are full to their capacity and the fresh inflows into Krishna river will now start reaching downstream. We expect Srisailam Dam to be full by August.”

He also added that due to heavy rains expected in Agumbe and Bhagamandala in the Tungabhadra river catchment, it is likely that TB Dam at Hospet would have a steady inflow in the next couple of days.

“With regard to rainfall in TS and AP, it will be normal in both the states. We have already estimated that it would be at least 10 days before the southwest monsoon advances further, but once it does, there will be sufficient rains in two states. Everything will be normal”, said Dr Ramesh.

Rejecting the El nino factor this year, he said “So far, we have had no such indications. Southwest monsoon will be as normal as we had predicted at the beginning of the season.”

Meanwhile, northern Telangana did not get the rainfall that was forecast because an upper air circulation did not develop into a depression as expected. This depression was supposed to strengthen the monsoon currents.
