Breach in Cauvery canal near Papanasam district

The PWD engineers rushed to the spot and began to plug the breach using sand bags, paddy straw, bamboos.

THANJAVUR: A three-metre wide breach occurred on the left bank of Konkanvaikkal (canal) that branches out from the Cauvery near Papanasam on Thursday.

The PWD engineers rushed to the spot and began to plug the breach using sand bags, paddy straw, bamboos etc. According to PWD engineers, water was (80 cusecs) released into Konkanvaikkal on Thursday morning from Cauvery. A breach occurred on left bank and water started flowing into paddy fields. The canal irrigates 4,000 acres of land in Karupur, Kabisthalam, Koonanchery, Narasimhapuram, Adhanur, Thirumandankudi, Olaipadi and Erumjaipatti villages.

On information R. Duraikannu, state Agriculture minister, A. Annadurai, Thanjavur district collector, reached the spot and inspected the work. Anbarasan, superintending engineer, PWD is supervising the work.
