Security up on Tamil Nadu border, in Tamil-dominated areas

The situation is under control and no untoward incidents were reported from these areas, the police said.

Bengaluru: Following reports that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha’s health deteriorated after she suffered a heart attack on Sunday evening, police security was beefed up across the city on Monday, especially in areas where Tamil population is more and also at Attibele-Hosur and Chamrajnagar-Sathyamangalam border areas.

Two platoons of KSRP along with a dozen police personnel were deployed on the Attibele-Hosur border on Monday morning and the police monitored vehicles entering and leaving the city. Police personnel were also deployed at the Chamrajnagar-Sathyamangalam areas which witnessed trouble during the Cauvery water crisis.

“There was no restriction on the entry and exit of vehicles. Private vehicles from both the states were moving about without any issues,” a senior police officer said. “But KSRTC decided to temporarily suspend the operations from 7 am.”

Security was beefed up in several Tamil-dominated pockets, like Srirampura, Ulsoor, Jogupalaya, Vannarpet, Neelasandra, Old Madras Road, Austin Town, Ejipura and other areas. The situation is under control and no untoward incidents were reported from these areas, the police said.

Trucks stop, Exports from city hit
With hundreds of trucks stranded on the Bengaluru-Chennai national highway, the movement of goods from the state to different parts of the world through the Chennai port was halted totally. “Chennai is witnessing tension, and truck drivers are refusing to enter the city. Already, the state export sector witnessed huge losses because of the Cauvery controversy. If this situation continues, we will face more losses,” said Mr Raghu Nandan K., a city-based exporter. Tourism is the other sector that is expected to be hurt by this.
