‘Corner Shot’ at Indian Police Service school
Hyderabad: The ‘special tactics’ training for the Indian Police Service (IPS) probationers at the prestigious Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) has gone up a few notches.
Israel-made CornerShot, which provides its operator the ability to observe and engage targets from behind cover is the latest addition to the state-of-the-art arsenal at the NPA. It is a system platform for top-tier semi-automatic pistols like Beretta and Glock
Presently, CornerShot is used by military special operations forces, SWAT and counter-terrorism units across the world and is the most reliable accessory for the ground forces.
Sources told Deccan Chronicle that the CornerShot along with the latest simulators have been acquired by the NPA as part of upgrading its arsenal, which is done on a regular basis. The aim is to ensure that once the IPS probationers complete their training and step out of the academy, they are no less than the special forces across the world, in terms of training and use of state-of-the-art weapons and devices.
“CornerShot allows the user to see and shoot around corners without exposing themselves to return fire by the terrorist, which otherwise can prove deadly for our personnel. The IPS probationers are being trained to use this device, keeping in view the huge challenges faced during anti-terror operations,” sources explained.
Coming with a high-resolution video camera and monitor through which the user can view the targets located around the corner in real time, the CornerShot lever allows the operator to quickly swivel the weapon system up to 60º in either direction and turn it back to straight just as quickly. It also comes with a flash light.
Though the CornerShot is available with the National Security Guard (NSG), officials in anti-terror operations say that it will serve the security forces for decades to come. “Hopefully by the time the probationers complete their training and pass out of the academy, CornerShot will be used extensively in anti-terror operations,” sources said.
