Niloufer Children's Hospital orders probe into C-section death

Kin seek state's help in raising victim's son.

Hyderabad: In a tense atmosphere, family members of five maternity death victims staged a protest at Niloufer Children’s Hospital on Monday. The hospital has ordered an inquiry into the five deaths in a month, and suspended all the surgeries till a report is submitted by the fact-finding panel. Nusrat Begum, 20, from Nagole who lost her first baby a year back unfortunately lost her life too, after she delivered a 2.5kg baby boy in her second delivery through C-section on January 31.

According to the hospital and her family members, Nusrat was operated twice, the second time due to excess bleeding, after her caesarean surgery on the same day. Due to excessive bleeding, Nusrat developed complications as a result of which she was operated again. This is normally one of the last measures taken by gynaecologists to control excess bleeding in any delivery.

The family claims that her delivery was due on February 7 but Niloufer doctors went in for a C-section before the due date. Nusrat’s family was also asked to get 18 units of blood as her blood group was B-negative and this was reportedly not available at the Nilofer blood bank. Dr Savita Desai, a private practitioner and senior gynaecologist from Hyderabad, said, “If excess bleeding is not controlled by medication or any other measure, then the second surgery is a protocol adopted by gynaecologists to control bleeding. Even after taking all the measures, sometimes the bleeding can’t be stopped. Usually, excess bleeding is common in second, third or fourth deliveries. Somet-imes, patients die even after a few minutes or seconds of the second surgery done to control over-bleeding.”

SK Yusubhi, 50, mother of the deceased, blamed Niloufer doctors for all-eged medical negligence. “I am a poor widow and I have raised my four dau-ghters and two sons with difficulty. I lost my husband at a young age now I lost my daughter due to the negligence of the do-ctors. We seek justice.”
