People should help to make Pondy accident-free: V Narayanasamy
Puducherry: Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on Monday sought the people's cooperation to make Puducherry a ' road-accidents-free Union Territory'. .
The Chief Minister pointed out that though the population in Puducherry remained at 12 lakh, around 9.14 lakh vehicles are registered with the transport department here. Apart from this vehicles from neighboring states are also plying on the roads here creating a heavy traffic flow.
Over 46 per cent of the total road accidents in Puducherry are of two-wheelers and 60 two-wheeler riders died of head injuries in the road accident in the year 2016 alone, he said.
"Thus the territorial administration has decided to make wearing helmets compulsory for all two-wheeler riders which would come into force from May 1 this year; nobody would be exempted from wearing helmet mandate", said Mr Narayanasamy while inaugurating the road safety week celebrations here.
Different programmes including painting and essay competitions would be conducted in schools in connection with the road safety week celebrations.
Mr Narayansamy also inaugurated an open health check-up booth for the workers of the Puducherry Road Transport Corporation on the occasion.
