Rag pickers seek secure future
Bengaluru: Members of Hasiru Dala and Ona Thyaja Sangrahakarara Okkoota (clean city recyclers association) have submitted a memorandum to the Mayor and BBMP Commissioner to include them in the solid waste management programme and secure the future of thousands of rag pickers and dealers.
This is in the wake of corporators expressing doubt over handing over the task of dry waste collection to rag pickers in the new tender.
Over 1,000 post cards were mailed to Mayor Gangambike and leader of opposition at BBMP Padmanabha Reddy, requesting them to allow rag pickers to continue door-to-door dry waste collection. They also urged them to hand over all the 198 dry waste collection centres to rag pickers.
In the letter dated February 5, they explained that the present door-to-door collection system has many shortcomings. They have also cleaned black spots and picked recyclables making resource recovery possible. They pointed out that at present only 33 centres have been given to them and demanded that BBMP should continue to issue occupational identity cards to waste pickers as prescribed by the recently notified Solid Waste Management Rules 2016.
