Escalators in all platforms at Kozhikode railway station soon
KOZHIKODE: The fourth platform of the city railway station will also get two escalators soon. Works on the Rs Rs 3 crore system will begin with a stone-laying ceremony on Friday.
"Two escalators one for ascending and other for descending will cost Rs 1.5 crore each," M.K. Raghavan MP said.
"The station got an escalator in 2013, the first in the state, as part of raising it to the international standards. Now it has become the first one to have escalators in all platforms."
The escalators on the fourth platform which has a footfall of about 70,000 passengers per day will be helpful to thousands of passengers including women, children, patients and the aged.
The prayer for allotting a lift or escalator at the foot-over-bridge on southern part also is under consideration of the Railways, he added.Kozhikode and Chennai were on the list of railway stations chosen for upgrading to international standards, surpassing all other cities in southern India.
Among the 7349 railway stations of the country, only 23 are now entering the second round of modernisation with an outlay of Rs 1823 crore. Uralungal Labour Contract Society will implement its first phase.
The Standards Technical Committee of the Southern Railway has already cleared the project, and the detailed project report is under the consideration of its financial wing.
