TNEAC plans to end engineering counselling by August 15
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions Committee is planning to wind up the engineering counselling by August 15 by increasing number of sessions.
According to the sources, the engineering counselling will start on July 21 or 22 provided the MBBS counselling is conducted as per the schedule.
The state government is preparing the affidavit for seeking the Supreme Court’s permission to postpone the college opening date for the first year students from August 1 to August 16 this year.
“The number of sessions per day will be increased from eight to nine. The number of terminals also will be increased to 60 for accommodating more students in each session. We want to reduce the number of counselling days to finish it before August 15,” sources said.
The committee may go ahead with the engineering counselling if the MBBS counselling is further delayed because of the Neet confusion.
Earlier, the government had postponed the engineering counselling pointing out that over 5,000 of 6,730 top rankers in engineering counselling was eligible to join the medical courses.
If the engineering counselling is conducted before medical counselling it may lead to a large number of vacancies in top engineering colleges.
This year 1.41 lakh students have applied for the engineering counselling. The available seats for the counselling are expected to be around 1.80 lakh. The rank list was released on June 22. The engineering counselling was scheduled to start on June 27.
“The engineering counselling is being held offline. So, it’s not possible to give the vacant seat to the next eligible student. So, we have no other option but to conduct the counselling after MBBS counselling,” sources added.
At present, the engineering admissions committee is conducting the second phase counselling for the lapsed seats and not for the vacant seats.
