Mysuru: Kodagu which had experienced disastrous landslides and floods last year during the monsoon, is staring at a repeat this time with the Triveni Sangam of the Cauvery, Kannika and Sujyothi rivers in Bagamandala flooded due to heavy rains.
Connectivity between Aiyyangeri and Bagamandala has been disrupted as there is five feet of water on the road at Bagamandala. Connectivity between Madikeri and Bagamandala has also been affected because of three feet of water on the road. A tree fell on the main road connecting Madikeri and Somwarpet Tuesday morning, near Madapura, obstructing traffic for a while but it was cleared immediately. Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Anees Kanmani Joy has declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Tuesday and Wednesday. The district recorded 76.97mm rainfall between 8.30am on Monday and 8.30am on Tuesday. The DC issued an advisory bulletin and has alerted people to take necessary safety measures and contact the district disaster management authority on 08272-221077 for any emergency help.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a Red alert (predicting rainfall above 204.4mm) in the Malnad area, including Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga, coastal Karnataka including Dakshina Kannada district, Udupi and Uttara Kannada district for August 7, 8 and 9 and an Orange alert (predicting 115.6mm to 204.4mm of rainfall) for all these places on August 10. It has also issued an Orange alert for North-interior Karnataka including Belagavi and Haveri on August 7 and 8.
Meanwhile BJP MLA Mr K.G. Bopaiah inspected Bagamandala and said a flyover has to be built in the place to provide better connectivity. On Tuesday, the inflow into KRS dam was 12,655 cusecs and outflow was 6,296 cusecs, inflow into Kabini was 11,352 cusecs and outflow was1020 cusecs, inflow into Hemavathi was 17,623 cusecs and outflow was 5000 cusecs, inflow into Harangi was 2559 cusecs and outflow was 730 cusecs.
