Eco-tourism may worm its way into MTR buffer zone
Ooty: Wildlife eco-tourism, which is planned to be introduced in the buffer zone area of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) comprising the Segur and Singara reserve forests, will be a new era wildlife tourism attraction this autumn.
Forest sources said that a plan of action has already been drawn to introduce eco-tourism in the MTR buffer zone.
If everything goes according to plan, eco-tourism will come into effect from the second week of September, sources maintained.
“As of now, seven different routes have been identified to introduce wildlife eco-tourism. This includes a trip along the northern Hay area, Moyar and Aanikal areas. Private jeeps in the nearby Masinagudi area will be used for the purpose. Some guides have trained for this recently”.official sources said.
“The objective of this initiative, besides giving an opportunity for tourists to enjoy wildlife in the buffer zone, is to bring tourism based income to locals, tribals and other jungle dwellers in the MTR buffer zone limits,”sources added.
“The forest department will regulate jungle eco-tourism and fares for different routes will be announced soon. There is a plan to introduce jungle temple visits to help tourists visit famed jungle temples located in Siriyoor, Aanikal and Chokkanalli areas in the MTR buffer zone. There is also a plan for a trip up to the Segur falls near the Undimoyar area,” sources elaborated and added that an official announcement on this will be made after forest department higher ups in Chennai decide about the date to inaugurate the event.
