Social media rejoices apex court's decision
Hyderabad: As the Supreme Court wiped the tears of the LGBT community, social media shed tears of joy. With Section 377 being struck down by the apex court, users rejoiced so much so that the top five trends on Twitter across the country centred around the historic judgment. #LoveIsLove, #LGBT were trending apart from #Supreme court, #section377verdict and the section itself.
Petitioner Danish Sheikh took to Twitter to write about his journey from age of 13 to 29. In a tweet thread he said that from the age of 17 when he uttered the words “I’m gay” sitting in the dark and practising the utterance, until today at 29, where the highest court of the country told “me that I am, an equal citizen. That I have unambiguously the right to love,” it had been a long journey.
Many celebrities welcomed the move. Karan Johar wrote, “Historical judgement!!!! So proud today! Decriminalising homosexuality and abolishing #Section377 is a thumbs up for humanity and equal rights! The country gets its oxygen back!”
Not confined to Bollywood celebrities or politicians alone, several citizens started sharing their joy on social media. A user Dharani asked if the central board for film certification would remove the ban on film ‘Love Simon’.
