Telangana: RTA likely to introduce new registration codes
Hyderabad: Even as the proposal to change the registration numbers of 70 lakh-odd vehicles from AP to TS remains pending, there is talk of giving new codes to the vehicle registration numbers in the new districts being formed as part of reorganisation.
Transport officials said the state government will take a decision in a day or two on giving new codes after the list of districts is finalised. The proposal has led to apprehensions among motorists that they may have to run around RTA offices to get their vehicle registration numbers changed as per new district codes.
However, Transport department officials said motorists can relax, since the new district codes will not create any confusion but are proposed so that they provide clarity about vehicles registered in each district.
“The proposal is that only new vehicles that are registered after the new districts come into existence will be given new codes. Owners of existing vehicles need not get the registration numbers changed,” said a senior official.
Officials admitted that TS is probably the only state with so many different vehicle registration number plates. “There are a large number of vehicles plying with AP as the state code, many with TS state code. Then there are the old number plates and High Security Number Plates. However, there is no problem as long as the data of every vehicle is maintained properly,” officials said.
When contacted, JTC T. Raghunath said no decision has yet been taken with regard to changing of registration number from AP to TS. The decision is still pending with the government.
