Kerala CM to open renovated memorial at Guruvayur
Thrissur: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the renovated memorial of Guruvayur temple entry sathyagraham near the Lord Sree Krishna temple at Guruvayur on November 8.
The memorial was modified by laying tiles and constructing a new entrance tower in memory of K. Kelappam, who was in the forefront of the temple entry agitation here. The works were completed by spending nearly Rs 1 crore, chairperson of Guruvayur municipality P.K. Santhakumari said.
Mr Vijayan will also inaugurate the new CCTV surveillance system with as many as 305 new cameras installed for the security of the temple.
The cameras were installed by spending Rs 4 crore as a part of the Prasad project for temple cities allotted by the union government, Guruvayur Devaswom Board Managing Committee (GDMC) chairman K. B. Mohandas said.
"The temple entry sathyagraham memorial has a historic role which is to convey to the new generation the dark age of caste inequalities that existed before the renaissance in Kerala. There will be a third phase of modification for the memorial," an official release said.
Jumbo race
Mr Mohandas said that the GDMC would seek legal opinion on the notice sent to it by the Supreme Court over the petition of a Banglore-based NGO on banning the annual jumbo race at the temple citing alleged cruelty meted out to the pachyderms of GD during the race.
"It is an event associated with the temple which has been happening for several decades now. There is no torture as alleged by the petitioners," Mr Mohandas said.
