Renovated Kollam Chira to be inaugurated today
Kozhikode: Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar will inaugurate the renovated Kollam Chira located near Koyilandy on Friday. The renovation of the major water body source of Kozhikode district was done by Kerala Land Development Corporation (KLDC) at a cost of Rs 3.5 crore.
The fund was provided by the National Bank for Agricultural and Rural Development (NABARD) on the instruction of the central government. This 12- acre historic lake originally belonging to Sri Pisharikau temple was used for anchoring traders' ship in the past and was known as the lake connected to Arabian sea by a channel.
Mr U.V. Kumaran, Pisharikavu Devasom executive officer, said that the lake water was drained out and the mud was cleared to make it a pure water body source in the district. Walls were constructed to protect the lake. The water source was being used by thousands of pilgrims during the Sabarimala season, he said.
According to the KLDC, the work was completed fast with the NABARD funds. The government has plans to renovate more such water bodies across the state, he said.
