Tenneti Nagar Colony cries for new drainage
Visakhapatnam: Once a pleasant place nestling amidst greenery and hills near Madhavadhara, Tenneti Nagar Colony, mainly inhabited by settlers from Srikakulam and Vizianagaram, is crying for attention as callous officials have ignored basic civic issues.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, senior resident S. Narayana Rao said, “The drains of the colony laid years ago have corroded and narrowed down. They get blocked every now then, causing huge trouble to the residents. This is leading to proliferation of mosquitoes in the area.”
Surrounded by Murali Nagar, Ayyappa Nagar and NGOs Colony, the 40-year-old Tenneti Nagar Colony is a home to about 10,000 people.
Colony resident P. Papa Rao complained of erratic water supply in the area. “The four borewells in the colony have gone dry due to lack of ground water. One has to pump them for a long time to get a bucket of water in case of emergency. We are also irritated with the growing population of street dogs.”
He noted that the skating park, which also has a swimming pool, buzzes with activity. With Vizag transforming into a smart city, a lot of changes have come into the modest colony too, and multistoreyed apartments have come up in place of independent houses.
Mr Sanapala Nirmala, a senior resident, regretted the lack of council for the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation. “Sometimes it becomes a problem to find the concerned official to report a problem. Sanitation is a big problem in the colony,” she said.
