Kozhikode: Tomb vandals roam scotfree
KOZHIKODE: The Thiruvambadi police is yet to take action against those who smuggled out bodies from the cemetery of Little Flower Church, Pushpagiri, near Thamarassery, from where about 25 mortal remains were taken away during night. When protests erupted, the Church officials erased the cemetery and cleaned the site by dumping loads of soil there.
Mr Vincent Kalappurayil, one of the complainants, told DC that police was afraid to take action against the Church officials. "The police should find out who smuggled out the bodies without our permission," he said and added that the Church had levelled the ground.
This was done to facilitate a huge quarry project on the land where the Church was running a quarry for many years previously. The 13.2 acres of land was sold years back to a mining lobby.
The Thamarassery tahsildar submitted a report to collector Seeram Sambasiva Rao over the issue.
The quarry is spread over 1.75 acres of the total 13.25 acres owned by the church. The department of mining and geology had issued a licence for quarrying from 9-11-2009 to 8-11-2010. During the rest of the years the Church operated the quarry illegally, according to a report of revenue officials.
