Hyderabad: Lake cleaning hits drain works
Hyderabad: Residents of Devinagar Colony near Neredmet have become victims of the lack of coordination between Ramakrishnapuram lake development works and drainage line works in their colony.
In the process of cleaning the lake, authorities left water out through a channel, unaware that drainage works are going on. This resulted in the flooding of Street No. 8 in the colony on Wednesday and Thursday. With the sudden release of water from the lake, drainage lines saw a huge overflow of lake and sewage water, which filled up the adjacent empty lands. Many households on that stretch were also affected and the contaminated sewage water remained in pits.
Satyanarayana from Devinagar said, “A few homes were trapped in water and residents had no way to come out even during emergencies, as on one side, the road has been dug for drainage works and water has filled up the space on the other.”
Another resident said, “A little coordination between both departments would not have lead to this situation.” When contacted, Y. Shekar Reddy from the Lake Protection Committee said, “We are emptying the Ramakrishnapuram lake to clean it. We were unaware that drainage construction was going on.”
