Deadly to mix ego and alcohol

The ego of a person develops from 18 years of age and the super ego is what people learn from the good things they see and do.

Hyderabad: Experts say ego is the main factor which provokes drunk people to satisfy their urges. The ego suppresses the super ego after people get drunk, leading them to turn aggressive.

In recent incidents, including the accident at Banjara Hills on Friday, a minor’s rape and murder in Bolarum on Saturday and a son killing his father on Sunday in Hayathnagar, alcohol was the common factor.

The ego of a person develops from 18 years of age and the super ego is what people learn from the good things they see and do. Over a period of time, ego also grows when people consume alcohol, which is more dominating than the super ego. Usually when a person consumes alcohol, his super ego dissolves and the ego takes over.

“This seeks only pleasure and provokes a drunk person to satisfy himself by rash driving or killing someone or attacking someone and hurting others. It only causes hurt to other people,” said senior psychiatrist Dr Preeti Swaroop.

Physiologically, consumption of alcohol leads to instincts which the super ego cannot control. Counselling persons who get involved in crimes under the effect of alcohol can lower the ego effect. Their super ego should be inflated to an extent that it does not get dissolved by alcohol and does not lead to such incidents.

“At this point they become responsible and become more of social drinkers,” Dr Swaroop added. Good parental care, the family’s financial situation also play a role in shaping ego issues, she said.
