Puducherry CM against simultaneous polls

The Law Commission has convened a 2-day meeting with all national and state political parties to discuss its feasibility, he added.

Puducherry: Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy on Saturday said he would oppose the proposal to conduct polls simultaneously to the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies in the country. “The idea to conduct the polls simultaneously is not feasible. I have already written letters to the Law Commission and Home Ministry stating my stand on the subject”, said Mr Narayanasamy.

The Law Commission has convened a 2-day meeting with all national and state political parties to discuss its feasibility, he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raised the subject of conducting simultaneous polls during the NITI Aayog meeting.

He further said he had put forth various Puducherry issues related to Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, who visited on Friday.

“Puducherry administration has reiterated its long term demand for special category state status and inclusion of it in the 15th Finance Commission during the visit of Vice President, other issues including waiver of loans and 25 per cent quota of seats in UG and PG courses in Pondicherry University were also brought to the notice of Mr Naidu,” he said.

On the Supreme Court judgement on Delhi government, the Chief Minister reiterated that the verdict would be applicable to Puducherry also.

Ms Bedi earlier made it clear that the Supreme Court verdict is not applicable ias both the union territories are governed by separate articles of the Constitution of India.
