Contaminated water complaint from Nagaram
Hyderabad: Residents of Sai Niwas Nagar, Nagaram, are concerned about water contamination in their locality. Some residents have complained that the water they are receiving from a borewell has a foul smell.
Francis Xavier, a resident of Sai Niwas Nagar, said, “The water which we are receiving from the borewell contains sand and granules, making it not suitable for even household purposes. I have spent Rs 50,000 to install a water harmoniser to soften the water.”
Many residents complain that the contaminated groundwater from the borewell causes skin diseases. Tanuja M, another resident, said, “I cannot cook with the groundwater. We cannot even take a bath without adding Dettol and I am facing the issue of hairfall.” There are 50 families in Sai Niwas Nagar, which is under the Nagaram Municipal Corporation. They do not get municipal water supply, and there is no drainage, concrete roads or power supply.
Residents fear that the water contamination is due to untreated waste disposal by nearby industries.
Hyderabad and its suburbs are facing acute water shortage. With the passage of time, the population of the city has increased manifold, and the water supply has not kept pace. With lakes getting contaminated and borewells going dry, people are forced to depend upon the commercial establishments and tankers for their water needs.
