Green protocol at Thattukadas

Corp to ban plastic sheets, disposables.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As part of its effort to root out single-use plastic and bring down the quantity of plastic waste generated here, the city corporation is gearing up to enforce green protocol at thattukadas in the state capital. According to officials, the civic body is gearing up to ban disposables and plastic sheets rampantly used by thattukadas for serving food.

“We have decided to tighten the noose on thattukadas, who serve food in disposables. Drives would be launched soon. We want every one of them to follow the green protocol and strictly use reusable plates and glass for serving food and water. We have found that the quality of the plastic used by many of the street vendors is of low quality and could pose serious health issues for the public,” said the official. Reusable plates and glass would be made mandatory.

Meanwhile, the civic body has launched ‘Subhojanam’ initiative – which aims at ensuring safe food and cleanliness at eateries. “We have decided to tie up with the health department and food safety authorities to take the initiative to the next level. Training and awareness programmes would be held for food handlers and street vendors,” the official said.

The official said that only people with ID issued by the civic body would be allowed to work at hotels, bakeries, tea-stalls and catering units. “Medical checkups would be carried out before issuing the ID. Special training on best hygienic practices would be imparted for registered food handlers,” said the official.
