Kerala assembly becomes first legislative body to pass resolution against UCC

Assembly urges Centre to refrain from divisive move

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala legislative assembly on Tuesday unanimously urged the BJP led Central government to refrain from implementing measures like Uniform Civil Code (UCC) which could adversely affect the entire population and the unity of the country.

The demand was raised through a resolution passed by the assembly against the UCC. The Kerala assembly became the first legislative body in the country to pass a resolution against UCC.

The resolution moved by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the House, slammed the BJP led Central Government for its proposed move to implement UCC. The resolution dubbed the Centre’s move as hasty.

It said the UCC would erode the secular character of the Constitution. The Centre is going ahead with its proposal in a unilateral manner without engaging in a debate with the stakeholders or evolving a consensus.

The chief minister said the Centre’s move has caused widespread apprehensions and concern among various sections of the population.

Through the resolution the Kerala Legislative Assembly has also expressed concern and shared the apprehensions of the people.

According to the resolution, a uniform civil code is a divisive measure which poses threat to the unity of the people besides being detrimental to the nation’s cohesion.

It may be recalled that the Kerala assembly became the first legislative body in the country to pass a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in December 2019.
