Makeshift bridge washed away by flash floods in Krishnagiri

Locals demand action against contractor.

Krishnagiri: A temporary bridge put up across Akkathangai river in Anchetti of Denkannikottai taluk of Krishnagiri district was washed away in flash floods on Thursday evening.

This is the third time the bridge, built with cement pipes on the ground and filled with earth on the top surface, has been carried away by swirling waters, affecting traffic movement between Hogenakkal and Denkannikottai. Local residents were asked to take a different route to reach villages surrounding Anchetti.

According to the local residents, the contractor appointed for construction of a permanent over bridge at the place has learnt no lessons despite two similar incidents in May and August this year.

They also asked the district administration to avoid recurrence of such incidents in future and demanded action against the contractor for not completing the bridge work in time.

In Keratti, on Anchetti-Hogenakkal road, a small building was damaged after the school compound wall collapsed on a tiled house. No one was injured in the incident. Similar incidents were also reported in others places across Krishnagiri district.

As much as 2,880 cusec of water received as inflow into Kelavarapalli dam of Hosur in Krishnagiri is being discharged without storing water as the dam has reached the level of 42.64 feet, against its full storage level of 44 feet.

The surge in outflow of Kelavarapalli dam has increase the storage capacity of KRP dam in Krishnagiri district. The present water level as measured on Thursday evening was 50.50 feet in height against its total level of 52 feet in height. The inflow into the dam is 2,976 cusecs and the outflow is maintained at the same level, sources said.
