Bengaluru: The announcement by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to set up five sewage treatment plants (STP) has kindled hope among citizens of seeing rejuvenated lakes soon.
With the installation of one of STP's of 150 MLD capacity at Koramangala-Challaghatta valley, one can hope of a sewage free Bellandur lake. The project is scheduled to get over by 2020 will cost Rs 590 crore on the state's exchequer.
Confirming the report N. Satish, Chief Engineer, BWSSB (wastewater management), said, “Apart from Koramangala Challaghatta valley (150 MLD), STPs will be installed at Hulimavu, Agara, Sarakki and Begur. The geotechnical investigation at Koramangala Challaghatta valley is under process.”
Satish told Deccan Chronicle that the soil testing process was initiated on August 31 and the construction will kick start after the completion of the survey.
The 726-acre Bellandur lake receives 480 MLD of treated and unt reated sewage. The experts cite that more than 30 per cent of the sewage enters through storm water drains, so restoration of sewer lines is imperative in ensuring the success of STPs.
On being asked if the installation of five STP’s would be a major breakthrough in treating the sewage entering the lakes, Ram Prasad, co-founder, Friends of Lake, said, “It can be a major breakthrough if BWSSB comes out with a financial model. A huge cost is incurred by the BWSSB in maintaining the plant. Moreover, restoration of the sewage pipes across the city should be done simultaneously with the project.”
