Robot to defuse bombs: Bengaluru teens’ bid to help jawans

The robot can be used to trace explosives and defuse them without human intervention.

BENGALURU: Hari Raghav. S and Punit Kumar Maharshi, two city teenagers from St. Claret Pre-University College, have invented a bomb defusing robot called ‘Military-bot’, which can not only trace the explosives faster but also defuse them without human intervention, saving lives.

After four years of upgradation, the duo presented the robot at the Science Competition held at Presidency University and won Rs 50,000 in prize money. They want to present the robot to the government once it is ready as they believe that the Indian defence system depends on manual intervention to defuse bombs.

“Thousands of soldiers are sacrificing their lives on the borders for our safety. We wanted to do something for them. Most of the time, lives are lost when they try to defuse bombs. This drove us to find alternatives to defuse bombs, without posing a threat to the lives of soldiers,” they said.

They hit upon the idea when they were in ninth grade when they were disturbed by the death of soldiers and the plight of their families. They wanted to find some means to secure the lives of soldiers.
