Nambiar's vision gifts sight to many eyes

Comtrust Eye Hospital started by him helps thousands.

Kozhikode: It was the hard work and allegiance put together during the superannuated life of a chartered accountant that resulted in one of north Kerala’s largest eye hospitals.

Meet K.K.S. Nambiar, who is in the joy of celebrating his 90th birthday on Monday. He has put his soul and heart to turn the dream of an eye hospital under a charitable trust benefiting the whole of Malabar region into reality.

After retiring as a chartered accountant at the age of 71, he extended his support to Comtrust followed by the formation of Comtrust Eye Hospital in 1999, which has since conducted more than 50,000 free cataract surgeries.

It provides quality eye care to the common man at an affordable cost. The comprehensive eye care includes free surgeries to the poor. The nonagenarian says he is on cloud nine seeing its growth in less than two decades.

“Since we had the support of several people in and around the country both financially and emotionally, we were able to build the hospital to this level and now the Trust has opened its centres in Ottapalam, Kanhangad and Thalassery, after Kozhikode, covering all of Malabar region," he told DC.

Other than his dedication towards the growth of the hospital, Mr Nambiar was the first qualified chartered accountant in northern Kerala. He believes age is just a matter of numbers and makes sure that he never misses a visit to the hospital and related offices every day. Also, an avid reader, he has set up a mini library at his Malaparamba home out of his passion for new authors.

Mr Nambiar with his family comprising his wife Chandravathi, daughter Sasikala and sons Krishnan and Narayanan, is busy celebrating his 90th birthday.
