Water from Karnataka reaches Mettur dam
Salem: Water released from the dams in Karnataka reached the Mettur dam on Saturday and the inflow has increased gradually.
The heavy rain in water catchment areas in Karnataka increased water flow for the dams in the state. The water from the dams of Kabini and KRS was released seven days ago for Tamil Nadu and the water reached the state border at Biligundulu around 10 am on Saturday. The water inflow for the Mettur dam has increased to 1100 cusecs from 100 cusecs per second.
The water reached the Mettur dam around 12 noon and however, the inflow is yet to increase due to water loss along the river due to dried river bed. The dam was receiving 200 cusecs in the afternoon, which was 37 cusecs a day before. The water inflow is expected to increase within the next few days.
According to officials from the Public Works Department (PWD), the Karnataka released 2000 cusecs each from the two dams a week ago. Since the 3000 cusecs were released additionally on Saturday, the water inflow is likely to increase gradually. In the evening the water flow touched 1000 cusecs per second and the water level was at 20.090 feet at the dam.
