RTOs running short of Registration Certificates certificates
Hyderabad: People who have purchased new vehicles during the past two months are yet to get their Registration Certificates (RC) from the Regional Transport Office (RTO). The reason: The vendors have stopped delivering printed cards after the backlog of bill ran up to over Rs 10 crore and the Road Transport Authority failed to clear the payment, said an official from Indian Federation of Road Safety.
“The vendors are not supplying the cards as they are not receiving payment from the government. The stocks are running dry at the offices and with no fresh supply, the officials are unable to issue the registration certificates to the vehicle owners. The authorities blame dearth of funds for the backlog of payments,” the IFRS official, who wished to remain anonymous, quoted an RTO official as saying, adding that he had received information that VIPs were given the RC while others were being asked to wait.
The vehicle owners are being sent back empty handed when they approach the RTO offices with the receipts of registration, seeking RC cards. “Our drivers are being booked by traffic police for not carrying RC. We cannot hand over the original receipt to the drivers. The public is stuck without a solution here,” said M. Ravi Kumar, an executive at an IT firm in Madhapur.
“It has been almost a month since our office ran out of RC cards. We were told that the supply will start by the next week, but there are no assurances,” said Gopal, a source at Karkhana RTO office.
Joint transport commissioner G. Panduranga Rao, however, denied the reports and said that as far as Hyderabad is concerned, there were no backlog of payments. “I am not concerned with payments. However, according to my knowledge, there is no delay in payments to anyone,” he said.
