Proposal to lower water level in Srisailam reservoir: Buggana

Kurnool: Finance minister Buggana Rajendranath has announced that the government would evaluate the water levels in the Srisailam reservoir and take necessary steps to release water for irrigation for Kurnool and Nandyala districts through various sources.

He was addressing the joint district irrigation advisory council meeting convened at the YSR Centenary Hall within the collectorate premises in Nandyal on Tuesday. Deputy chief minister and district in-charge minister Amzath Basha and labour minister Gummanur Jayaram attended the meeting.

Rajendranath also said a proposal was under consideration to lower the water level in the Srisailam reservoir from 863 feet to 854 feet, using the Pothireddypadu head regulator. Water release to the canals would be determined based on inflows from projects like Almatti, Narayanpur and Jurala.

The minister urged the engineering department to implement measures ensuring equitable distribution of water from KC Canal, Telugu Ganga and SRBC canals, effectively managing both the drinking water and irrigation requirements. He stressed the need to sustain steady flow of water into the Tungabhadra lower canal.

The minister advised release of water to the Siddapuram Lift Irrigation project only when the Velugodu balancing reservoir contains a minimum of 10tmc water.

He asked officials to release water to the irrigation areas of the Shiva Bhashyam Sagar project.

In-charge minister Amzath Basha assured farmers that water would be released to the irrigation canals of the joint district based on government approval and considering the needs of the upcoming Kharif season of 2023-24.

Zilla Parishad chairman Y. Papireddy, Nandyal MP Brahmananda Reddy, Nandyala collector Manzir Samoon, Kurnool collector Srijana and several MLAs and council members participated in the meeting.

Prior to the meeting, the finance minister laid the foundation for a road bridge project with a budget of Rs 5 crore at Parumanchala in the Jupadu Bungalow mandal.
