Rains wreak havoc in Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Heavy downpours for the second consecutive day on Sunday resulted in flooding in certain localities in the Old City causing hardship to families and commuters.
Complaints of rainwater entering into houses poured in from Al Jubail Colony, Nimra colony, Uppuguda, Lalithabagh, Amannagar and Bandlaguda areas. Taking a cue from Saturday’s rains, people vacated the ground floor and shifted to the first floor of their houses on Sunday morning when they heard that heavy rain was forecast.
“The water from the nala is inundating the streets and entering into houses. The Umdasagar tank and Pallecheruvu have been encroached upon, following which the reservoir capacity has decreased, resulting in discharge of water into the nala,” said Naseer Ahmed, a local resident. The Hashamabad channel connects the Pallecheruvu with Umda-sagar and Jalpally Lake. Rain water entered into a function hall at Bandla-guda on Saturday and flooded the kitchen where food for the guests was being prepared. Jalpally village on the outskirts of the city was literally cut off with water flooding both the approach road at Laxmiguda and Jallpally road from Pahadishareef.
Following heavy rains on Sunday afternoon and later in the evening, water logging was reported from Arundathinagar colony, Lalithabagh, Azampura, Malakpet, Edi Bazaar, Engine Bowli, Aramgarh and Ramnaspura. The Katedan rail underbridge and the one at Azampura were inundated and the Azampura RuB closed to traffic.
The worst affected were motorists trying to move into the newer parts of the city through the Afzal-gunj-M.J Market road, with three feet of water accumulating on this stretch near the Old Begum Bazaar police station.
“The nala adjacent to the police station overflows, resulting in flooding of the road. On Saturday, the road was closed to traffic,” said Dinesh Gupta, a trader. A wall collapsed in the Chandrayangutta area while another pole of a private function hall was uprooted.
