VVIP syndrome: Bengaluru gets cleaned ahead of Theresa May's visit

Why does the BBMP have such an attitude, and why don't the residents deserve a cleaner city, ask experts.

Bengaluru: Otherwise a stinking city with pothole-filled roads gets scrub cleaned during VVIPs visit, like it happened during UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s whistle-stop tour of the IT capital on Tuesday.

Why does the BBMP have such an attitude, and why don’t the residents deserve a cleaner city, ask experts.

When DC questioned Mayor G. Padmavathi, she said, “We don’t wake up and clean the city only when a VVIP visits. Our cleaning activities are taken up every day no matter a VVIP is visiting or not.”

Asked why a pile of garbage rotting near the Ulsoor Someshwara temple was not removed all these days and was cleaned only the night before Ms May’s visit, she said, “Our pourakarmikas collect garbage door-to-door. Those who don’t hand over the garbage to pourakarmikas stuff it in plastic bags and throw them while going out of their homes. Gradually, the spot turns into an eyesore."

She said, “It is only because of lack of civic sense of the people garbage had piled up near the Someshwara temple. Our workers had to clear it immediately before Ms May’s visit. We can make people fall in line only by imposing fines.”

On filling of potholes, she said, "The BBMP has taken up pothole filling in many areas in the city. In Ulsoor, the work began a week ago and had nothing to do with Ms May’s visit.”
