GVMC orders food safety checks ahead of Diwali
Visakhapatnam: Food safety department officials of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) on Thursday inspected several sweet shops in the port city ahead of the Diwali festival.
Officials checked the quality of ingredients used in making sweets and
savouries. In particular, they checked for hygiene, use of synthetic food
colours and sale of sweets that are not fresh.
GVMC authorities seized some samples from a sweets shop in Dondaparthi for
testing them.
Food safety officer Apparao and assistant FSO Nandaji stated that
inspections are being conducted to ensure that shopkeepers follow norms as
fixed by food safety standards.
However, the raids by GVMC officials have upset many sweet shop owners and
traders in sweets, particularly when their business is peaking ahead of
Diwali.
