Garbage: Bellalli residents up in arms

People residing near the quarry are being exposed to a number of health hazards.

Bengaluru: Residents of Bellalli are up in arms against the BBMP for indiscriminate dumping of garbage generated in the city at the quarry at their village i in Byatarayanapura constituency in Bengaluru North Taluk.

Ramesh, a resident of Bileshivale, said that the quarry has been turned into dumping yard, but without any scientific approach. The quarry has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and flies. People residing near the quarry are being exposed to a number of health hazard.

BBMP has already spoilt the environment of the Mandur and Mavallipura by resorting to unscientific dumping. The ground water and lakes are getting polluted due to the discharge of leachate, he added.

Local Corporator Muneendra Kumar said BBMP has not been following any scientific measures to curb the stench and possible health hazards. The stench spreads to as far as two kilometers radius.

Although the BBMP is permitted to dump 40 truck load of garbage at the quarry with adequate safety measures, it has been dumping over 200 truck loads, he rued.
