The Guntur Municipal Corporation prepared a summer action plan with Rs 2 crore expenditure .

Guntur: Motors would be used to pump water from Krishna river to Guntur city to quench the thirst of the public in this summer season. Drinking water problem has increased during the past few days before the starting of summer season. The Guntur Municipal Corporation prepared a summer action plan with Rs 2 crore expenditure under which the GMC would draw water from Krishna river through motors and would modernise the Guntur channel for a hassle-free water supply to Guntur city.

According to the GMC, there are 1.85 lakh houses in the city of which 56,000 do not have drinking water tap connection. The GMC started integrated drinking water scheme to quench the thirst of the public but the project at a snail’s pace.
The Guntur public faced difficulties for water due to decrease in water level in the Krishna river at Prakasam Barrage. The standard level of water should be 12 feet at the barrage but it largely decreased to 4 feet which barred Guntur city from getting water through Guntur channel. Taking the difficulties into consideration, the GMC decided to draw water from Krishna river through motors and to clean Guntur channel for free flow.

The GMC installed big water motors on the banks of Krishna river to draw water. The stored water would be released into the Guntur channel. The locals of Nallapadu, N. Mark, G. Sridhar and others lamented that the shortage of water supply before the arrival of summer is scaring the public as they are receiving irregular and insufficient water and urged the GMC to take measures to store water to use it in the summer season.GMC SE, Gopala Krishna Reddy, said that water would be supplied through gravity till Mangalagiri and motors used to supply the water to Guntur water storage. He said that a cross-bund would be constructed at Takkellapadu to supply water to the city without diversion and added that the GMC spending Rs 2 crore funds under summer action plan to quench the thirst of Guntur people.
