Kannur: Some 106 libraries in Kalliasseri assembly constituency has gone "high-tech" with each getting a laptop, printer, projector, screen and sound system.
Software should be put in place connecting all the libraries, which meant any member could share 5,30,000-odd books.
These libraries have become utility centres of the public relations department to reach the government programmes to masses.
They have also floated film clubs with state support.
"The uniform software is in the making. Video conferencing facility connecting all these libraries had been set up with the help of the virtual studio at Kannur government engineering college," said P.K. Baiju, Kannur district secretary of State Library Council.
T.V. Rajesh MLA spent Rs 1.28 crore from his local development fund of T.V Rajesh to materialise the project.
Earlier, 160 libraries in Taliparamba constituency and 120 libraries in Payyanur constituency had joined the project. With this, 500 government approved libraries are "high-tech" now in the district.
"A vast resource of information has been made available at our libraries, particularly targeting the youth," said Kalliasseri grama panchayat president E.P. Omana.
P. Karunakaran MP declared the libraries as "high-tech" at a function held in Kalliasseri.
These libraries are in Kayyasseri, Ezhome, Cheruthazham, Madayi, Pattuvam, Cherukunnu, Kannapuram, Kunhimangalam and Kadannappally panchayats.
