Multi-level parking lots fail to take off in Visakhapatnam
Visakhapatnam: The multi-level vehicle parking facility in the port city has remained far from reality despite umpteen announcements by the Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA).
Over the years, the authorities concerned have been toying with the identification of the locations for the parking project and with no headway.
VUDA vice-chairman P. Basanth Kumar has indicated that multi-level vehicle parking lots under public and private partnership (PPP) mode would be set up at three places, RK Beach, Dwara-kanagar and Siripuram to address parking woes at major centres in the city.
However, the authorities concerned are yet to invite tenders for it. Ear-lier, it had plans to take up the project near the City Central Park opposite the LIC Building.
“Vizag has emerged as a city because of the thri-ving business prospects. Most of the small shops in the main business areas are turning into multi-storied buildings. However, they are not providing enough space for parking. This apart, burgeoning vehicle growth, coupled with illegal parking is giving a bad experience to the motorists,” said K. Vithal, a software engineer.
ACCP (Traffic) K. Mahendra Patudu said, “Dedicated automated multilevel parking lots are planned at four places in the city. We have suggested to the GVMC and VUDA to construct the automated multi-level parking lots at Beach Road, Daba Gardens, Dwarakanagar, Jagadamba Junction, Maddilapalem and also at Gajuwaka.”
