Visakhapatnam: Two students drown in canal
Visakhapatnam: In a tragic incident, two children drowned in Yeluru canal near Naidupalem area under Nathavaram mandal in Vizag district on Sunday morning.
The deceased were identified as P. Statish, 9, a Class-IV student and P. Tharun Ramesh, 12, a Class-V student of a private school and residents of Naidupalem.
Both the boys were studying in a private school at Atchutapuram in Vizag district and had come home for a holiday on the account of Sunday to attend a function in Tharun Ramesh’s house.
The two had gone to a small hotel for breakfast on Sunday morning by peddling a bicycle. While returning home riding on the bicycle through a kuccha road along the Yeluru canal, they slipped into the canal while trying to avoid a muddy pool on the road.
Inspector of Narsipatnam Rural Police Station, L. Revathamma, said that the kuccha road was fully slushy and slippery due to the recent heavy rains and both the boys slipped into the flowing Yeluru canal and drowned.
Though some locals have noticed when the children drowned in the water, they could not rescue the boys as it happened very fast. After hours of efforts by the police and locals, the bodies were fished out later and handed over to the family members after an inquest and post-mortem.
The police have registered a case under Section 174 of CrPc and investigation is on.
