VISAKHAPATNAM: Two members of a family were killed and three others suffered injuries after a rain-soaked wall of their house collapsed on them at Kumaram village in Garividi mandal in Vizianagaram district in the wee hours of Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Addala Laksmi (49) and her grandson, Addala Harshit Varma (5). The incident took place when five members of a family were asleep. The injured people were shifted to the government hospital at Vizianagaram.
The police said that parts of the Vizianagaram district experienced heavy rains since Friday morning. The wall of the old house collapsed on Lakshmi and Harshit Varma, who were sleeping. Three others of the same family were injured in the incident.
Upon hearing a loud noise, the locals rushed to the spot and alerted the police. The police, with the support of locals, recovered the bodies from the debris. The condition of the three injured people is said to be stable. A case has been registered and the bodies were sent for post-mortem.
As a precautionary measure, the police and revenue officials swung into action to identify the old houses in the mandal and evacuate the people from their dwellings.
