Heavy rains hit life at Vilangad
Kozhikode: Panic has gripped the people living on the high ranges of Vilangad and surrounding areas following the downpour for the last two days. The rivers and water bodies are overflowing and the bridge connecting Vilangad and Valook has been submerged.
A minor landslip was reported at Valook on Wednesday. Trees fell on houses and buildings damaging them. Huge crop loss was also reported in the area.
“If rain continues for the third day, the entire area will be submerged. Due to the steep terrain of the region, chances for landslip are more,” said P. Joy, a farmer.
Pashukadavu, another hilly area in the district, is also under threat. A minor earthquake occurred at Mavattom inside the forest between Chakittapara and Maruthonkara grama panchayats on Wednesday night. Minor landslips and crop losses were reported in other areas of Maruthonkara panchayat.
"The situation is becoming worse. Thrikanthod river is overflowing. A dozen families of a colony have been shifted to relief camps at Pashukadavu. We are assessing the situation. The grama panchayat held a special meeting on Thursday to discuss the issue," said Maruthonkara panchayat president K. M Sati.
