Kerala rain havoc: Central team visits Kozhikode
Kozhikode: A central team visited the flood- affected areas here on Thursday to assess the damage. The team inspected the losses to agriculture crops and power infrastructure and visited the affected homes in Thamarassery Assembly constituency. It would present a detailed report to the centre in ten days.
Collector U.V. Jose, who presented a report, said the district administration ran more than 30 relief camps in which nearly 200 families were accommodated. He made a detailed presentation on the major landslips at Kattipara and Thiruvambadi, which killed 14 people, and the havoc caused by sea erosion and floods.
Steps to prevent the outbreak of epidemics were also discussed during the meeting held by the collector with the team. The team comprised B.K. Srivasthav, director- in- charge, directorate of oilseed development, Nersy Ram Meena, deputy director, central electricity authority, and V.V. Sasthri, regional officer, transport ministry.
“The rain disaster in Kozhikode district, especially the rural areas, is serious and hence maximum funds will be sought from the centre for rehabilitation,” said Mr Srivasthav. The people have suffered huge losses and all assistance will be provided to them, he added. MLAs Purushan Kadalundi, Karat Rasak and George M. Thomas and officials attended the meeting.
Houses, hopes washed away
The landslip at Kannapankandu, Puthupadi, Thamarssery taluk, has washed away the dreams and possessions of several families.
Two families escaped unhurt though their houses were destroyed. Mujeed along with his family is in tears as he holds in his hand the invitation card for the house warming , which was destroyed in the landslip.
The house was constructed with the money he earned by working in a Gulf country.
“It took more than two years for me to construct the house, but nature has taken it away in just seconds,” said Mujeeb. Every-thing has been lost and they are left with nothing, he said. He had invited all his relatives and friends for the house warming which was fixed for this weekend.
