Divert Bhavanisagar surplus waters for delta crops: PR Pandian
Thanjavur: Surplus waters of about 60,000 cusecs are being released into Cauvery through Amaravathi from Bhavanisagar dam which has filled up due to heavy rains in catchment areas in the western ghats.
“This surplus can be regulated through Grand Anicut canal and used for cultivation in Cauvery delta,” said P.R. Pandian, coordinator, Thamizhaga Anaithu Vivasaya Sangangalin Orunginaippu Kuzhu, on Friday.
In a press release, he said that one lakh cusecs of water is released from reservoirs in Karnataka and this will reach Mettur dam in one week. While water can be released from Mettur dam for ‘samba (long-term)’ paddy cultivation, surplus water from Bhavanisagar due to rains should also be used for cultivation, Pandian said.
He also said that 50 per cent of the Kudimaramathu works taken up has been completed and the rest should be completed with a time frame, as water will be released into rivers and canals from Mettur dam. Works which have not yet begun can be taken up next year from February, Pandian added.
