Hyderabad: Khaki sellers do brisk business on promotions

Policemen are visiting the stores to get new uniforms and other accoutrements.

Hyderabad: Shopkeepers selling police uniforms in the city of Hyderabad are doing brisk business with the large-scale promotions of police personnel across the state.

Policemen from the rank of head constable to additional superintendent of police are visiting the stores to get new uniforms and other accoutrements.

Several retailers at Mehdipatnam, Amberpet, Pathergatti and Lal Bazaar in Secunderabad cater to the specific needs of police and army personnel in the city. Whistles, shoes, socks, badges, pathakams (medals), caps and other articles are sold at the shops.

“It’s the first time in several years that such a large number of promotions have been given. Generally, small numbers of policemen get promotions in different phases,” said Shabbir Ahmed, one of the shopkeepers that has benefited.

Usually such a bonanza occurs during Ganesh festival, Bonalu, Moharram and Milad-un-Nabi when forces from other districts are drafted in for security arrangements.

A retailer from the Mahankali police station area said that it is accessories such as shoelaces, caps, belts, etc and not uniforms that bring in the business as uniforms are mostly procured through the department.
