India Records 514 New COVID-19 Cases, Active Cases Drop

Decline continues as health officials monitor JN.1 sub-variant impact.

Hyderabad: India reported 514 new cases of COVID-19, with the number of active cases decreasing to 3,422, as per the health ministry's update on Thursday. Over the past 24 hours, three deaths were recorded, two in Maharashtra and one in Karnataka. The decline in daily cases persisted until December 5, 2023, when a new sub-variant, JN.1, and cold weather conditions contributed to a resurgence in cases.

Following December 5, the maximum single-day rise was 841 new cases on December 31, 2023, amounting to 0.2% of the peak cases observed in May 2021. Approximately 92% of active cases are recovering under home isolation. Officials indicate that the JN.1 sub-variant is not causing a significant increase in new cases or a surge in hospitalizations and mortality.

India experienced three waves of COVID-19, with the delta wave peaking in April-June 2021, reporting 414,188 new cases and 3,915 deaths on May 7, 2021. The national recovery rate stands at 98.81%, with over 4.4 crore individuals having recovered from the disease. The country has administered 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines, according to the ministry's website.
