NGOs come to corporation aid at Kozhikode
Kozhikode: The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation is planning to take the help from NGOs to maintain its comfort stations and toilets in the city. As a first step, the corporation owned toilet at Moonnalingal, which is in a dilapidated condition, would be taken up by the Greater Malabar Initiative Foundation, a Kozhikode based NGO headed by business moghul Dr Azad Moopen.
Corporation health standing committee chairman K.V. Baburaj said that more NGOs and other organisations had expressed interest in renovating and maintaining the toilets of the corporation. “At present we have given sanction for the Greater Malabar Initiative Foundation to renovate the construction at Moonalingal. They will take up the work once their plan gets approved,” he said. Two more toilets will be given to the NGOs soon, he said.
“We will take up the entire work, including renovation, maintenance and payment of electricity and water supply charges. We will also make a space ready for the corporation so that the civic body can use it for renting out for ATMs. It will also help the corporation to earn extra revenue and provide security for the toilet,” said Greater Malabar Initiative Foundation CEO S. Gopakumar. “We hope that our initiative will help the public and also encourage other organisations to take up similar initiatives in association with civic body,” he added.
Recently, the Eram Scientific Solutions had also renovated the existing seven toilets and installed eight new e-toilets in the city free of cost. They are maintaining the toilets.
